Construit aux Pays-Bas en\u00a01918 \u00e0 la demande de la compagnie maritime HAAS de Rotterdam, l\u2019Ooterschelde est le dernier repr\u00e9sentant de la grande flotte de go\u00e9lettes ayant navigu\u00e9 sous pavillon n\u00e9erlandais au d\u00e9but du XXe<\/sup> si\u00e8cle. Le navire doit son nom \u00e0 la partie est du fleuve Escaut, qui traverse la France, la Belgique et les Pays-Bas pour ensuite se jeter dans la mer. L\u2019Oosterschelde est le plus grand voilier restaur\u00e9 des Pays-Bas\u00a0: un v\u00e9ritable embl\u00e8me du savoir-faire n\u00e9erlandais en construction navale et en navigation maritime \u00e0 voile.<\/p>\n

Comme cargo, l\u2019Oosterschelde a transport\u00e9 des tonnes et des tonnes de marchandises, comme des briques, du hareng et des bananes. En\u00a01921, le navire est vendu; il change de mains trois fois, puis est converti en voilier \u00e0 moteur. Il est finalement rachet\u00e9 en\u00a01988 et on souhaite lui redonner sa splendeur d\u2019antan.<\/p>\n

L\u2019association Het Rotterdamse Zeilschip est alors cr\u00e9\u00e9e pour amasser des fonds en vue de la restauration du navire, qui commence en\u00a01990. Il est inaugur\u00e9 officiellement en\u00a01992 par Son Altesse Royale la princesse Margriet.<\/p>\n

En 2000, l\u2019Oosterschelde participe \u00e0 la Tall Ships Race de Boston \u00e0 Amsterdam.<\/p>\n
