Construit en 1936, comme cinq navires-fr\u00e8res, dans le chantier naval Blohm & Voss \u00e0 Hambourg, en Allemagne, il est initialement baptis\u00e9 Horst Wessel.<\/p>\n

D\u2019abord utilis\u00e9 par les nazis pour entra\u00eener les cadets de la Marine allemande, le navire passe aux mains des Am\u00e9ricains comme prise de guerre \u00e0 la fin de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. En 1946, un \u00e9quipage de la Garde c\u00f4ti\u00e8re am\u00e9ricaine, \u00e9paul\u00e9 par l\u2019\u00e9quipage allemand qui se trouve toujours \u00e0 bord, transf\u00e8re le grand voilier de Bremerhaven \u00e0 son nouveau port d\u2019attache\u00a0: New London, au Connecticut. En 2005, l\u2019Eagle retournera d\u2019ailleurs \u00e0 Bremerhaven pour la premi\u00e8re fois, et sera accueilli avec enthousiasme.<\/p>\n

B\u00e2ti durant le cr\u00e9puscule de la navigation \u00e0 voile, l\u2019Eagle est le fruit de si\u00e8cles de raffinement en mati\u00e8re de construction et de conception navales. Sa coque est faite d\u2019une couche d\u2019acier \u00e9paisse d\u2019un centim\u00e8tre. Il est dot\u00e9 de deux ponts pleine longueur en acier surmontant un pont plate-forme. Les gaillards d\u2019avant et d\u2019arri\u00e8re sur\u00e9lev\u00e9s sont faits de planches de teck \u00e9paisses de 7,6\u00a0centim\u00e8tres pos\u00e9es sur de l\u2019acier, tout comme le pont sup\u00e9rieur.<\/p>\n

L\u2019Eagle donne aux futurs officiers l\u2019occasion de mettre en pratique la th\u00e9orie sur la navigation, l\u2019ing\u00e9nierie et d\u2019autres domaines connexes qu\u2019ils ont apprise en classe. Les apprentis des classes sup\u00e9rieures exercent leur leadership et s\u2019occupent de t\u00e2ches qui incombent normalement aux officiers subalternes, tandis que les apprentis des classes inf\u00e9rieures assument les fonctions des militaires de rang subalterne, comme se relayer aux immenses barres \u00e0 roue en bois qui servent \u00e0 gouverner le vaisseau. Quiconque est form\u00e9 sur l\u2019Eagle vit une exp\u00e9rience transformatrice.<\/p>\n

Sur le pont et dans la m\u00e2ture de l\u2019Eagle, les jeunes hommes et les jeunes femmes respirent l\u2019air salin et go\u00fbtent \u00e0 la vie en mer; ils sont mis \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9preuve et stimul\u00e9s, parfois jusqu\u2019\u00e0 la limite de l\u2019endurance. Grimp\u00e9s dans les haubans, ils sont confront\u00e9s \u00e0 la peur et apprennent \u00e0 la surmonter. Cette exp\u00e9rience forge leur caract\u00e8re et am\u00e8ne les officiers en herbe \u00e0 d\u00e9velopper leur leadership et leur esprit d\u2019\u00e9quipe, des atouts pr\u00e9cieux pour le reste de leur carri\u00e8re.<\/p>\n
